Audition Info
Valley Theatre Company welcomes performers aged 16+ to audition for this year’s Cabernet Cabaret: Back in Time (Songs from the Great American Songbook). Audition participants should sign up for a 5-minute slot and prepare one song from the following list or a different song that fits the theme. A speaker and aux cable will be available for performers to use for a karaoke or accompaniment. No accompanist will be available. Please prepare the entire song.
Cabaret Cabernet is largely a self-rehearsed production. All performers cast in the show must sign a cast/crew agreement that outlines the rehearsal expectations, including participation in dress rehearsals, load-in, and strike.
CONCEPT/THEME
The Great American Songbook is the term that loosely defined as "American Standards". These are timeless songs pulled from jazz standards, big bands, Broadway, and movies. Think of prominent composers and lyricists: Gershwin, Berlin, Carmichael, Rodgers, Hart, Hammerstein, etc. Think of prominent performers: Sinatra, Fitzgerald, Bennett, Garland, Gaga, Bublé. The song style may be classic, but you are encouraged to give it your own spin.

Performers will select from the song list below OR may bring another selection that they propose to fit the concept/theme. The directing team reserves the right to make the final set list and casting decisions or to bring in additional performers as needed.

AUDITION REQUIREMENTS:

Note ANY and ALL dates/times you have conflicts on your online audition form below.

Indicate on your audition form 2-3 songs from the list of available show songs that you would be interested/willing to sing. You may not necessarily get cast in the song that you audition with, but please audition with the one song you really want to do the most.

Upload a headshot/digital photo as part of the form.

ACTOR/CREW AGREEMENT. Download, print, sign. Upload completed agreement into form below or bring to your audition.

Sign up for ONE 5-minute audition slot on September 12th HERE. If you are auditioning a duet in addition to a solo, please reserve a second spot for the duet and note it in comments. You are asked to arrive 10 minutes early to check in.
IF YOU CAN'T MAKE THE AUDITION DATES: We will accept a video audition. Record yourself on your phone - introduce yourself, your song selection, and sing the entire song. Upload the video to Google drive or iCloud and share a link to the video with Directors' emails or in the audition form below. Video auditions must be received by September 12th at 9 AM to be considered.
What We Are Looking For
A successful cast member will be:

A strong singer

Able to rehearse music solo (or ask for specific help)

Experienced with basic harmony (such as experience in a choir)

Comfortable on stage

Have experience working with a hand mic (or committed to learning)

Able to create a strong audience connection

Healthy (able to commit time & energy)

A good communicator (giving and receiving)

An active supporter of other team members

OTHER TIPS:

If the song is a duet and you want to prepare to sing the song with another actor and audition together you may. Each actor must still fill out their own audition paperwork, but you may sign up for one audition slot.

There is flexibility allowed in casting. Songs do not necessarily need to be sung by a person of the gender it was originally written for. What is important is that you choose a song that showcases your vocal range well, and that your acting choices make sense.

3-5 rehearsals scheduled in September & October. These will be individual and small group rehearsals, at set timeslots. Full Run through on October 10th.
